Valerian Root

Sleep, Protection, Purification

bullet

Most people find the odor of Valerian Root to be unbearably foul, however it is worth getting used to, as almost no other herb is more useful for inducing deep, restful, dreamful sleep (steep, covered, 2 tsp. herb per cup of water for 9 minutes). Remember, however, that you must NEVER put boiling water over Valerian that you are to ingest, as all of the volatile oils, those that offer you the lovely relaxing effect, will evaporate away. Use water just at a hot simmer, and then be sure to cover the cup or pot in which you brew your Valerian. Using the smallest sized cup possible (less air space) and covering it with a saucer or such is ideal.

To protect and purify your home, periodically simmer 3 tsp. of Valerian and a bit of frankincense in 1 pint of water on the back of your stove for 30 minutes. Afterwards, simmer a pinch or stick of cinnamon and some apple or orange slices in a pint of water to help clear away any lingering Valerian odor. No bad spirit could possible survive this treatment.
